Code of Conduct for School Students on Buses

Applying for subsidised travel under the Scheme means parents and guardians are confirming their child understands the Code of Conduct.

It was developed by Transport for NSW alongside the bus industry, parent groups and education authorities, and covers how students should behave travelling to and from school so that everyone stays safe and comfortable.

You'll find the Code of Conduct printed on every School Student Transport Scheme application form. Please go through it with your children so they know what's expected of them on board.

Breaching the Code of Conduct can carry a penalty depending on how serious it is, ranging up to a full suspension of the bus pass, which would mean finding another way to get to school.

Code of Conduct

When travelling between home and school, students must adhere to various regulations regarding passenger behaviour and the Code of Conduct for travel by bus.

To ensure their safety and the comfort of other passengers students will:

• behave safely at all times
• respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no use of offensive language, fighting, spitting, placing feet on seats or throwing things in or from the bus/train/ferry)
• Give up seats to all adults and disabled passengers
• protect all property and report any vandalism
• show their travel pass or ticket when requested
• only use the travel pass for its intended purpose
• maintain possession of the travel pass at all times
• follow instructions about safety
• adhere to the law that bans smoking
• not eat and drink in prohibited areas
• keep arms, legs and other parts of their bodies inside the bus/train/ferry
• only attract the attention of the driver in case of emergency.
